BREAST CANCER CHECK UP

All women of 50 years and older, who are registered in the department Burgerzaken (= who are registered inhabitants of Apeldoorn) receive an invitation to come and have their breast checked.
A female nurse checks whether there are perhaps cancer cells in the breasts.
It is done by means of X-ray photographs. It is not painful.

If you have received such an invitation, you go to the medical centre, which is temporary in your neighbourhood. If you cannot come on the day or the hour that you are called up, you can make a new appointment. The telephone number is on the invitation.

How is this check-up done? It is best to put on comfortable clothes for you need to undress the upper half of your body. You present yourself at the desk. When it is your turn you can undress in a small dressing room. Then you are called into the check-up room where a laboratory worker makes X-ray photographs of your breasts. After this you can get dressed again and you are asked to wait if the photos are alright. You will not get the result of the photos straight away, for two other laboratory workers must examine them first.

After about ten days the result is sent to you. Your family doctor is also informed.
It is of the greatest importance that you take part in this check-up!
